WHITTINGTON HOSPITAL

Toureen was appointed to deliver demolition, groundwork, piling, and reinforced concrete frame works for a new four-storey, 78-bed mental health inpatient facility at Whittington Hospital. The project required careful management of restricted logistics and complex excavation conditions adjacent to a live hospital campus. On completion, the facility will become The Camden and Islington Mental Health Facility.

Following the demolition of the existing Whittington Education Centre (WEC) and former staff accommodation on the Whittington Hospital campus, Toureen was appointed to deliver the construction of a new four-storey, 78-bed mental health inpatient facility.

Toureen’s scope of works, including the demolition phase, comprises site clearance, piling enabling works, perimeter sheet piling, and attendance to CFA piling operations for both contiguous and bearing piles. Additional responsibilities include groundworks, basement excavation with earthworks support and propping systems, and the construction of the reinforced concrete substructure and superstructure frame.

The project presented a number of significant challenges, particularly in relation to logistics and ground engineering. The site’s close proximity to the live hospital environment restricted access for deliveries and construction operations, requiring careful planning and coordination to minimise disruption to hospital activities.

Further complexity arose from the sloping topography of the site and the depth of the proposed basement excavation near neighbouring boundaries, creating potential risks associated with ground movement. From pre-construction through to delivery, Toureen has worked collaboratively with BAM’s design and project delivery teams to refine both permanent and temporary works solutions, ensuring the most efficient and robust design outcome.

Upon completion, the development will provide a modern, purpose-built healthcare environment known as The Camden and Islington Mental Health Facility.

Toureen is proud to contribute to a project that will enhance specialist healthcare provision while delivering safely and efficiently within a sensitive live hospital setting.
