WORTHING GAS WORKS
Toureen Contractors were engaged by Berkeley Southern to undertake the final demolition works at the Worthing site and to manage site remediation in accordance with the approved strategy developed by Berkeley Consultants and Rombout.
The site is located within a residential area on three sides, with a major retail outlet nearby. This proximity is a key consideration throughout demolition and remediation, with strict controls on dust, noise, and vibration implemented and closely monitored at all times.
Following completion of demolition, the removal of heavy coal tar deposits is carried out through the excavation of identified hotspots, including the former coal tar pit located deep within the historic gas holder reservoir.
The focus then shifts to ensuring effective management of dust, noise, vibration, and odour, with zero complaints received. This outcome reflects a strong commitment to environmental management and supports Toureen’s wider corporate social responsibility objectives.
To finalise the site, clean, contamination-free corridors are established for use by follow-on contractors. A stabilised piling mat, in line with Berkeley Southern’s piling design and requirements, is also constructed.
A key achievement for the project is a score of 44/45 in the Considerate Constructors Scheme audit, reflecting the team’s commitment to delivering the highest standards of workmanship and site management.
