As part of the development of the new £92 million College of North West London campus at Wembley Park, Toureen Contractors’ specialist demolition division, Tilley and Barrett, is delivering a complex structural demolition programme focused on safety, sustainability and resource efficiency. The project demonstrates Toureen’s commitment to innovative demolition solutions, material reuse and reducing environmental impact.
A new £92 million campus for the College of North West London, part of United Colleges Group, is being developed on Olympic Way at Wembley Park, close to Wembley Stadium. The new facility will provide modern, flexible learning spaces and advanced technology to support future generations of students.
Toureen Contractors’ specialist demolition division, Tilley and Barrett, was appointed to deliver the demolition works, supporting the early stages of this major redevelopment project. Following the completion of asbestos removal, soft stripping, de-planting and temporary works, the project progressed into the structural demolition phase.
Sustainability and resource efficiency are central to the demolition strategy, with opportunities identified throughout the strip-out process to recover and repurpose materials, including raised access flooring and glazing. This approach supports the reduction of waste and maximises the value of materials recovered during the works.
The demolition methodology has been developed to minimise environmental impact, with Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) adopted as the baseline fuel and electrically powered robotic demolition equipment used as the primary demolition solution. Compact demolition-rated mini excavators and skid-steer loaders support the safe and efficient removal of demolition arisings from the working floors.
The structure is being demolished through a carefully planned floor-by-floor sequence, ensuring works are completed safely and efficiently within the busy Wembley Park environment. Concrete arisings generated during the demolition process are being processed on site for reuse as piling mat material and temporary fill, while surplus material is transported to Toureen’s recycling facility for processing into 6F2 and Type 1 recycled aggregate for use across wider Toureen Group projects.
Through this approach, the project is targeting 99% landfill avoidance, demonstrating Toureen’s commitment to sustainable demolition practices, circular economy principles and responsible resource management.
