Toureen has successfully completed the installation of three 60,000-litre underground fuel storage tanks at a challenging Liverpool petrol filling station development. Located adjacent to a major railway line and alongside the four-lane carriageway at the end of the M62, the project required detailed planning, stakeholder coordination, and the successful delivery of critical works within a tightly controlled Network Rail possession period.

Toureen recently completed the installation of three underground fuel storage tanks at a uniquely challenging petrol filling station development in Liverpool, requiring detailed planning, stakeholder coordination, and precise execution.

Located adjacent to the main railway line serving Liverpool and positioned alongside the four-lane carriageway at the end of the M62, the site presented a number of logistical and engineering challenges from the outset.

As part of the works, Toureen undertook the excavation of a 4.5m-deep engineered and shored tank farm, alongside the implementation of highway lane and footpath diversions to facilitate safe access and construction activities. Careful coordination with multiple stakeholders was required throughout the programme to ensure the works could be delivered safely and efficiently.

One of the project’s most significant milestones was the installation of three 60,000-litre underground fuel storage tanks. Due to the site’s close proximity to the adjacent rail corridor, a three-hour Network Rail possession was negotiated months in advance, providing a limited window in which the tanks could be craned into position safely.

To maximise efficiency during the possession period, all three tanks were delivered with pre-installed cradles, allowing the installation sequence to be completed within the allocated timeframe. The possession also provided an opportunity to undertake monitoring works on the adjacent 8m-high retaining wall, ensuring all activities were completed safely and in accordance with project requirements.

The successful completion of the tank installation demonstrates the value of early planning, detailed logistics management, and close collaboration between project teams and stakeholders.
